Williams (Ted) Tunnel opens.

December 18, 1995

The tunnel connects the Fort Point Channel area to Logan Airport. The former Red Sox star attends the dedication event. Construction of the 1.6-mile tunnel began in September 1991, and involved lowering a dozen, 1,000-foot-long steel tubes into a trench dug on the floor of Boston Harbor, then connecting and burying them. The Williams Tunnel is preceded by a shorter tunnel under the Fort Point Channel, whose construction is even more complicated. Both are connected to the Massachusetts Turnpike Extension in 2003.*
